History
Afro-Asian Institute of Medical Sciences (AAIMS) was founded in August 1998.Initial programs comprised of short practical training courses in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound for Physicians only. Under the Supervision of Dr. Syed Amir Gilani, the first batch of five physicians was trained in August 1998. In early 1999 few specialized advance courses in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound were added. As the technology of Ultrasound advanced and the patient need for diagnostic ultrasound grew, more sonologists were needed in Pakistan and in the neighboring countries; the institute arranged some short courses of Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound in Nepal, Malaysia and Bangladesh with collaboration of some hospitals and renowned institutes in these countries in 1999 and 2000.
Over the last Eleven years the institute has trained more than 3200 physicians in Pakistan who had Basic Ultrasound training from us.
More than 1000 students from 22 Asian and African countries got full time training from us in these eleven years. Our visiting faculty has trained about 8000 physicians and sonographers through their fast tract one to two week ultrasound training programs in 27 countries of Asian and Africa.
We conducted an advanced course in gynecological and obstetrical ultrasound in 2002 in Salmaniya hospital Manama Bahrain with collaboration of Ministry of Health Bahrain followed by five international seminars on Ultrasound in Dubai, U.A.E in 2002 and 2003.
We signed an agreement of collaboration with Al-Zaeim Al-Azhari University, Khartoum Sudan in 2003 to offer practical training to their students of M.Sc and PhD in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound and have trained and supervised 266 students of M.Sc and two of PhD through this program, which has helped a lot to train the sonologists and sonographers in this developing African country.
Similarly through a MOU signed in 2004 with Sudan University of Science and technology (SUST) Khartoum Sudan. we are offering M.Sc and PhD in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound and Radiological Sciences in Pakistan and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and have trained and supervised 118 M.Sc and 4 PhD candidates through this program.
International Union for Cancer Research (UICR) Switzerland has also included our centre at their research centers and sent a student for fellowship last year.
This short history reflects the efforts we have made to upgrade the standards of Education and Research in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound and Radiological Sciences in Asia and Africa. In these 11 years 143 of our trained sonologists and sonographers took ARDMS examination and all of them secured more than 85% marks and were declared successful in their first attempt.
We have proved to be the only institute who is serving and representing Asia as well as Africa.
